Asperger’s syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Recently, Asperger’s is technically no longer a diagnosis on its own but is a part of a broader category called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Asperger’s is one that doctors label as a “high-functioning” type of ASD. It can start early in life, and initial manifestations may include difficulty in making eye contact, awkwardness in social situations, and the lack of the ability to respond to others. As people with Asperger’s grow older, trouble in social situations may become more apparent. While they may be capable of independent daily living, we must know how to respond or work with them the proper way.
If you happen to work with someone with Asperger’s, you might have noticed that he or she displays impoliteness or insensitivity. But you must not take this behavior against you. It is important that the workplace make necessary yet subtle adjustments when communicating with employees who have Asperger’s.
A great way to communicate with them is through technological means— e-mail, texts, and chats. It is also important that they are made aware of specific instructions when it comes to particular tasks. The most useful coping mechanism for working with people with Asperger’s is to also recognize that they have limitations. Them not being able to look at you in the eye does not imply that there’s something wrong with you. It’s just the way they behave.
